A D-Day day trip from Paris is one of the longest days you can book in France and, for many visitors, the most moving. The beaches are about three hours from Paris by road, so a tour leaves early, gives you roughly half the day in Normandy, and gets you back late in the evening. Almost every tour from Paris concentrates on the American sector: Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and the Normandy American Cemetery above Omaha.

Three things have changed in 2026, and most guides have not caught up. The landing beaches became a UNESCO World Heritage site in July. The cemetery's grave areas were closed in late July because of a drought restriction. And the Bayeux Tapestry has left Bayeux for London until 2027. Below are every tour we could verify, compared, then what each of those changes means for your day.

What has changed at the beaches in 2026

Checked against official sources on October 19, 2026. Recheck the cemetery notice shortly before you travel.

01

The cemetery’s grave areas are closed

On July 28, 2026, the American Battle Monuments Commission closed all grave plot areas at the Normandy American Cemetery because of a drought water restriction, with no reopening date. The visitor center, memorial, chapel and Garden of the Missing stay open, and guided tours continue. Tours still stop here; if the closure holds, you will see the memorial rather than walk among the headstones.

02

Pointe du Hoc is under restoration

The site is open daily from 9am to 5pm during the works, but the visitor center has been closed since March 9, 2026, some paths and bunkers have been closed since mid-May, and access is by the west pathway only. The works run until mid-2027.

03

The Bayeux Tapestry is in London

The Bayeux museum closed on September 1, 2025 for rebuilding, and the tapestry is on loan to the British Museum from September 10, 2026 to July 11, 2027. You cannot see it in Bayeux until the new museum opens, expected around October 2027.

04

The beaches are now World Heritage

“The D-Day Landing Beaches, Normandy, 1944” were inscribed by UNESCO on July 26, 2026, covering Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword and Pointe du Hoc.

05

Cemetery reservations are coming

ABMC says free pre-registration for all visitors is expected to open at the end of 2026, for visits from summer 2027. Next of kin are exempt. Nothing is required for a visit this winter.

06

The cemetery path to the beach is closed

The path from the cemetery down to Omaha Beach has been closed since 2016, so tours drive between the two rather than walking down.

What a D-Day day trip actually covers

A day trip from Paris has time for one sector, and nearly every tour picks the American one. The usual stops are Pointe du Hoc, the clifftop the US Rangers scaled; Omaha Beach; and the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, on the bluff above it. Some tours add Utah Beach, the westernmost beach, and its museum. Others add the Overlord Museum, German bunkers, or Sainte-Mère-Église. Read each tour's stops in the comparison above; they differ more than the titles suggest.

Because the American sites sit at the western end of the coast, a day trip rarely reaches the British and Canadian beaches further east. The exception is a dedicated Canadian-sector tour, which visits Juno Beach, the Juno Beach Centre and the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, and does not go to Omaha, Pointe du Hoc or the American Cemetery:

That is the one to book if your family history is Canadian, or if you have already seen Omaha. Note that the Juno Beach Centre is closed for all of January and on December 25.

Why the day is so long

With about three hours on the road each way, tours run 12 to 14 hours door to door. Small groups leave as early as 7am. You will spend a lot of the day seated, so it is worth paying for the format that makes the time on the ground count: a guide who knows the stories, and stops that are not rushed.

The five beaches, and who landed where

French, Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian and Polish forces also took part in D-Day. A day trip from Paris usually covers Utah and Omaha; staying a night opens up the rest.

Coach, small group, private, or the train to Bayeux?

Big coach (up to about 50 people). The best value, and the only format here with lunch included. You get a guide all day and the core American sites. The tradeoff is pace: getting fifty people on and off a coach takes time. The most-booked coach tour also notes that its coaches have no child-seat anchors, so families need to bring their own restraints.

Small group (up to eight). More time at each stop, a driver-guide you can actually talk to, and usually a museum stop thrown in. Lunch is not included on any of the small groups we compared, and the ones that list a minimum age set it at seven.

Private. Door-to-door from your Paris hotel by Mercedes minivan, for up to seven adults and three children, with the route built around you. It is the most expensive option per booking and the easiest one if you are a family or have a specific grave or unit to find.

The train to Bayeux

Our favorite way to do Normandy is not a day trip at all. Direct trains from Paris Saint-Lazare reach Bayeux in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and Caen in about 2 hours. Go out the evening before, sleep in Bayeux, and join a small-group tour that starts there in the morning: you trade six hours on a coach for a dinner in a medieval town and a fresh start at the beaches.

If you want the train and the tour bundled, one product includes round-trip rail tickets to Bayeux and a guided minivan tour of the American sector. It is non-refundable and open to ages 14 to 85, so book it only when your dates are firm.

Doing it entirely on your own is harder than it looks. Local public transport to the beaches is intermittent, and the Nomad D-Day bus line runs only in July and August, so outside summer you need a car or a tour. Bayeux is outside the Île-de-France flat-fare area, so buy a regular SNCF ticket. Our day trips by train guide covers booking.

N° 08Bon à savoir

Before you go

01

Know the cemetery’s hours

The Normandy American Cemetery is open daily from 9am to 5pm, with last admission at 4:30pm, and entry is free. It closes on December 25 and January 1, so do not book a D-Day day trip for either date.

02

Check what lunch means

The two big-coach tours include a sit-down lunch. The small-group, private and Bayeux tours do not; some stop where you can buy one. Pack snacks for the early start either way.

03

Mind the age limits

Several small groups set a minimum age of seven, the Bayeux tour takes ages five and up, and the train package is limited to ages 14 to 85. Check before you book with children.

04

Pick a refundable tour

Nearly every tour here offers free cancellation, and several may cancel for bad weather or low numbers. The train package is the exception: all sales are final.

N° 09En combinaison

Adding Mont Saint-Michel

A few tours squeeze Omaha Beach and Mont Saint-Michel into a single day. We would not: the two are far enough apart that you end up seeing both through a coach window. If you have only one day for both, the private option at least lets you set the pace. If you have two days, do them separately and sleep in Normandy. See our Mont Saint-Michel day trip guide for the options, or compare every destination in day trips from Paris.

N° 10Good to know

Questions travelers ask

How long is a Normandy D-Day tour from Paris?

Expect 12 to 14 hours door to door. The beaches are about three hours from Paris by road each way, so tours leave early in the morning and return in the evening.

Can you visit the D-Day beaches from Paris by train?

Yes, with help at the other end. Direct trains from Paris Saint-Lazare reach Bayeux in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and small-group tours of the beaches start there. Local public transport to the beaches is intermittent outside July and August, so do not plan to reach them by bus.

Is the Normandy American Cemetery open?

Yes, daily from 9am to 5pm (last admission 4:30pm), and it is free. It closes on December 25 and January 1. Since a July 28, 2026 notice, the grave plot areas have been closed because of a drought restriction, while the visitor center, memorial, chapel and Garden of the Missing stay open. Check abmc.gov before you go.

Do I need a reservation for the American Cemetery?

Not this winter. ABMC expects to open free pre-registration at the end of 2026, for visits from summer 2027. Next of kin are exempt.

Can I see the Bayeux Tapestry on a Normandy trip?

Not in Bayeux. The museum closed in September 2025 for rebuilding, and the tapestry is at the British Museum in London from September 10, 2026 to July 11, 2027. The new Bayeux museum is expected to open around October 2027.

Which D-Day tour should Canadians or British visitors book?

Most day trips from Paris cover only the American sector. Canadians should look at the dedicated Juno Beach tour, which visits the Juno Beach Centre and the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. For Gold and Sword, the British beaches, staying overnight in Bayeux is the practical way to see them.

Is lunch included on D-Day tours from Paris?

Only on the two big-coach tours we compared, which include a sit-down lunch. The small-group, private and Bayeux-based tours do not.

Are the D-Day beaches a UNESCO World Heritage site?

Yes. “The D-Day Landing Beaches, Normandy, 1944” were inscribed on July 26, 2026, covering Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches and Pointe du Hoc.
