Bruges is a beautiful place to spend a day and a hard place to reach in one. It sits about 270 km from Paris, in Belgium, and coach day trips run 13 to 16 hours, with roughly three and a half to four and a half hours on the road each way. The train is faster: Eurostar to Brussels takes about 1 hour 22 minutes, and a direct Belgian train on to Bruges about an hour more.

Our honest advice: go by train and stay a night. Bruges is at its best early in the morning and after dark, once the day-trippers have gone. If one day is all you have, a coach tour takes care of the logistics, and the best-rated one gives you Brussels as well. Every option we could verify is compared below.

N° 03Par le train

The faster way: Bruges by train

The train beats the coach by an hour or more each way, and it lets you set your own hours in Bruges.

  1. Paris-Nord to Brussels-Midi/Zuid by Eurostar (the former Thalys route): about 1 hour 22 minutes, with roughly two dozen trains a day.
  2. Brussels to Bruges on a direct Belgian (SNCB) train: about 1 hour, with one to four direct trains an hour.

That is roughly two and a half hours plus the change, against three and a half to four and a half hours by coach. Book the Eurostar leg on eurostar.com and the Belgian leg separately on the SNCB site.

Passports and borders

France and Belgium are both in the Schengen area, so there are no routine passport checks on the train. Even so, France has notified temporary internal border controls, including with Belgium, from November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027. Non-EU travelers must carry a passport, and everyone should carry ID for spot checks.

Make it an overnight

Bruges rewards a night more than almost anywhere else on our list. You get the canals in the early quiet and the lit-up squares after the coaches leave, and you can split the journey so neither day is all travel. Search hotels in the where to stay section below, and see more rail ideas in our guide to day trips from Paris by train.

What to see in a day

Bruges is small enough to walk, which is the point. Most day trips give you a guided walk through the historic center and a few hours of free time. Spend them on these two things.

The Belfry

The 83-meter Belfry (Belfort) has 366 steps and the best view of the city’s rooftops. Adults pay €16 in summer (April 1 to November 2), at weekends and over Christmas, and €15 on winter weekdays (November 3 to March 31); under-18s pay €14 or €13, and under-7s go free. It is open 9am to 8pm in summer, and 10am to 6pm in winter except on Saturdays (9am to 8pm), with last entry an hour before closing. It is closed on December 25 and January 1, and for maintenance from October 19 to 22, 2026. Online booking is recommended.

The canals

The classic canal boat trip takes about 30 minutes and costs €15 for adults and €9 for ages 4 to 11 (under-4s free), at prices valid until December 31, 2026. Five companies run boats from five jetties, all on the same route at the same price. From March to October they run daily from 10am to 6pm. From November to February at least one jetty operates each day on a rotation. You cannot book ahead as an individual; buy at the jetty.

That matters for tours. One budget coach includes a canal cruise only from April to October, and another swaps it for a town hall visit in winter. Either way, you can still buy a boat ticket yourself at whichever jetty is open.

Money and December

Belgium uses the euro, so there is nothing to exchange. In December, Bruges is popular for its Christmas markets, and one tour runs a Christmas version from late November, with a glass of Champagne and Belgian chocolates.

Is Bruges worth it as a day trip?

If you have four or more days in Paris and love medieval towns and canals, yes. Bruges is unlike anything in France, and a day there feels like a different trip. If you have two or three days in Paris, probably not: you will spend more time on the road than on the cobblestones.

Closer alternatives with a similar pull:

  • Reims and Champagne: 46 minutes by TGV, with a Gothic cathedral and chalk cellars. See our Champagne day trip guide.
  • Provins: a medieval walled town about 1 hour 23 minutes from Paris-Est on the Transilien P, covered by the standard €2.55 Île-de-France ticket. Weekend trains were replaced by buses for works from September 26 to November 1, 2026, so check before a weekend trip.
  • Mont Saint-Michel: just as long a day, but the one sight in France that justifies it. See our Mont Saint-Michel guide.

N° 06Bon à savoir

Before you go

01

Plan for a 16-hour day

The best-rated coach tour takes about 16 hours and meets in Bagnolet, in the Seine-Saint-Denis suburbs, rather than central Paris. Children under 11 need their own car seat, and it is not recommended for travelers with reduced mobility.

02

Carry your passport

There are no routine checks inside Schengen, but France’s temporary border controls run from November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, and tour operators ask non-EU travelers to bring a passport.

03

Winter canal cruises

From November to February only one jetty may be running on a given day, and some tours drop the cruise in winter. Ask your guide which jetty is open and buy your ticket there (€15).

04

Time the Belfry

Last entry is an hour before closing, which is 5pm on winter weekdays. Climb it early in your free time so you are not racing the last entry.

05

Bring your phone and headphones

The budget coach’s audio-guide option runs on your own phone, so pack headphones and a charged battery for a long day.

06

Choose your minivan carefully

Minivan tours are faster and comfier than a coach, but group sizes vary. On one, the walking tour in Bruges may be shared with up to 20 people.

Questions travelers ask

Can you do a day trip from Paris to Bruges?

Yes, but it is a long one. Coach tours run 13 to 16 hours with three and a half to four and a half hours on the road each way. By train via Brussels it takes about two and a half hours each way, and many people find an overnight stay far more enjoyable.

How long does it take to get from Paris to Bruges?

About two and a half hours by train: Eurostar from Paris-Nord to Brussels in about 1 hour 22 minutes, then a direct Belgian train to Bruges in about an hour. By coach, allow three and a half to four and a half hours.

Is it better to take the train or a tour to Bruges?

The train is faster and lets you set your own schedule, and it pairs well with a night in Bruges. A tour is simpler if you have only one day and want transport and a guided walk handled. The best-rated tour also stops in Brussels.

Do I need a passport to go from Paris to Bruges?

There are no routine passport checks between France and Belgium, but non-EU travelers must carry a passport, and France has temporary internal border controls in place from November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027. Everyone should carry ID.

Do Bruges day tours include a canal cruise?

Some do, seasonally. One budget coach includes it only from April to October on its guided options, and another replaces it with a town hall visit in winter. Boats run daily from March to October, and on a rotation at one or more jetties from November to February.

How much does it cost to climb the Belfry in Bruges?

Adults pay €16 in summer (April 1 to November 2), at weekends and over Christmas, and €15 on winter weekdays. Under-18s pay €14 or €13, and under-7s are free. There are 366 steps.

What currency is used in Bruges?

The euro, the same as in France, so you do not need to change money.
