Mont Saint-Michel is 337 kilometers from Paris by road, which is the first thing to understand about a day trip there. Coach tours spend about four hours each way on the motorway and give you roughly four hours on the island, so the day runs 12 to 15 hours. It is worth it: the abbey rising out of the bay is one of the great sights of Europe. But go in with your eyes open.

No day trip we compared includes lunch, and the cheapest one includes no guide, only a host. Below are all six tours we could verify, compared, then the abbey prices for this season, the train option, the tides, and our honest advice: if you can spare a night, spend it here.

N° 03Avant de réserver

Be honest about the day

Every coach tour follows the same shape: an early start from central Paris, about four hours on the road, a few hours on the Mont, and a return to Paris around 9pm or later. The budget coaches differ mainly in what you get once you arrive:

  • Tour leader with free time, abbey optional. The most-reviewed option, and the best balance for most people.
  • Transport and abbey ticket, no guide. The cheapest way there, with a multilingual host and an optional audio guide. Fine if you like exploring alone; there is no restroom or Wi-Fi on the coach.
  • Guided village walk plus abbey with audio guide. A newer product with far fewer reviews than the others, kept here because it is one of the few big-coach options with a guided walk on the island.

The small-group trip trades the coach for a minivan of eight and adds a driver-guide, skip-the-line entry and a cider tasting. It is the one we would book for a single day.

Why we would stay the night

The Mont is at its best early and late, when the coach groups have gone. Some tour listings flag that they are not suited to travelers with mobility difficulties, and a 14-hour day is hard on anyone. If your trip allows it, take the train out, sleep on the island or the mainland, and see the bay at dusk and again in the morning.

N° 05En train

Doing it yourself by train

You can reach the Mont without a tour, and it is a good option for confident travelers. There are two routes from Paris:

  • The direct Nomad "Train du Mont-Saint-Michel" from Paris-Montparnasse to Pontorson–Le Mont-Saint-Michel, with a connecting shuttle bus. It runs daily from April to October and every weekend all year, with journeys from 3 hours 53 minutes. On off-season weekdays it terminates at Villedieu-les-Poêles instead, with an SNCF coach onward. A 2025 sample timetable left Montparnasse at 7:32am, reached the Mont at 11:29am, and returned at 6:10pm, back in Paris at 10:06pm.
  • TGV to Rennes, then a bus. The TGV from Montparnasse takes about 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours, and the Keolis Armor bus from Rennes takes about 1 hour 15 minutes more. There are only two or three buses a day each way, so check the timetable before you buy the train.

The official 2025 Nomad fare was €32 for an adult single including the shuttle, and the 2026 fare had not been confirmed when we checked. Book with Mont-Saint-Michel as the destination: a ticket to Pontorson alone does not include the shuttle, and Pontorson station is 9 kilometers from the Mont. Keep the ticket, which gets you the reduced abbey rate within five days.

Mont Saint-Michel is outside the Île-de-France flat-fare area, so this is a regular SNCF booking. Our day trips by train guide explains when fares open and how to book.

N° 06Les marées

Getting onto the Mont, and the tides

Cars and coaches park on the mainland. From there the free Le Passeur shuttle runs all year, takes about 12 minutes, and stops 350 meters from the ramparts. It runs from 8:30am to 10pm from November to February, 7:30am to 11pm for most of the year, and until 1am in July and August. Walking takes 40 to 50 minutes across the footbridge, and a paid horse-drawn carriage takes about 25.

When the bay floods

The strength of a tide is measured by its coefficient. Above about 90 you can see the high tide sweep in, sometimes with a tidal bore; arrive about two hours before high tide. Above about 110, the Mont becomes an island again for a few hours. In 2026, the official calendar flagged that risk on only two dates, August 14 and September 12, both now past. Access is disrupted but still possible, through the rocks passage, on October 26–29, November 25–27 and December 25–27, 2026, and the footbridge reopens about an hour to an hour and a half after high tide. The 2027 tide calendar is usually published in December.

Never walk on the bay alone

The sands around the Mont are dangerous: there is quicksand, the sea can surround walkers very quickly, and the river channels shift. The official advice is never to venture into the bay without an approved guide, including close to the Mont itself. The tourist office lists approved guides for crossings.

N° 07Bon à savoir

Before you go

01

Plan for lunch

None of the six tours we compared includes lunch. You can eat on the Mont, but bring snacks for the long road either way.

02

Pick the abbey option

Several tours sell versions with and without the abbey ticket. The abbey is the reason to go, so choose the version that includes it unless you plan to buy your own.

03

Bring your own child seat

The biggest coach tour notes that its coaches have no child-seat anchors, and the budget combo asks you to bring a car seat for children under 11.

04

Use the free Sundays

Abbey entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of November, December, January, February and March.

N° 08En combinaison

Adding the D-Day beaches

Two tours combine Mont Saint-Michel with Omaha Beach in one day. The budget combo runs 15 hours with an English- and Spanish-speaking guide and does not include a guided visit inside the Mont; its reviews are weaker than the dedicated tours. The private option above is the better way to do both, because you control the pace. Our view: they are two very different experiences and each deserves its own day. Compare the beach tours in our Normandy D-Day guide, or see every destination in day trips from Paris.

N° 09Good to know

Questions travelers ask

How long does it take to get from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel?

About four hours each way by road; it is 337 kilometers. The direct Nomad train takes from 3 hours 53 minutes, and the TGV to Rennes plus a bus takes about three and a half hours. Day tours run 12 to 15 hours in total.

Is Mont Saint-Michel worth a day trip from Paris?

Yes, if you accept that most of the day is travel. You get a few hours on the island and in the abbey. If you can spare a night, stay nearby and see it early and late without the crowds.

Can you go to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris by train?

Yes. The direct Nomad train runs from Paris-Montparnasse daily from April to October and on weekends all year, with a shuttle to the Mont. Alternatively, take the TGV to Rennes and the Keolis Armor bus, which runs only two or three times a day.

How much does the Mont Saint-Michel abbey cost?

An adult ticket costs €13 from October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, and was €16 from April to September 2026. The village is free. The abbey is closed on January 1, May 1 and December 25.

Do Mont Saint-Michel day trips include lunch?

None of the six we compared does. Budget for lunch on the Mont or bring your own.

When are the big tides at Mont Saint-Michel?

The biggest tides come around full and new moons. In 2026 the official calendar flagged a risk of the Mont being cut off on only two dates, August 14 and September 12. Access is disrupted but still possible on October 26–29, November 25–27 and December 25–27, 2026. The 2027 calendar is usually published in December.

Can you walk across the bay to Mont Saint-Michel?

Only with an approved guide. Quicksand, fast-rising water and shifting channels make it dangerous to walk on the bay alone, even close to the Mont.
