The Loire Valley is the most ambitious day trip on our list. Chambord is about two hours from Paris by road, Chenonceau is more than 200 km away, and the tours that link them run 12 to 13 hours from start to finish. It is still worth it. Nowhere else in France puts so many Renaissance châteaux this close together, and Chenonceau’s arched gallery over the river Cher is one of the loveliest rooms in the country.

The choice comes down to three things: how many châteaux you want to see (two or three), how big a group you can put up with on a long day, and whether you want lunch handled for you. None of the big-coach tours include lunch. Below are the tours we could verify, the 2026 château ticket prices, and the train route if you would rather go on your own.

N° 03Choosing

Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, or Cheverny?

Almost every tour from Paris is built around the same pair, and for good reason.

  • Chambord is the giant: a royal hunting palace set in its own forest park, the biggest and most theatrical of the Loire châteaux, famous for its double-spiral staircase. Go for the sheer scale.
  • Chenonceau is the beauty, built out across the river Cher on a run of arches. It is open every day of the year and charges every visitor the same price.
  • Amboise is two visits in one town: the Château royal d’Amboise above the Loire, and the Château du Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s home, a short walk away. Choose a tour that includes it if Leonardo is part of the draw.
  • Cheverny is the furnished, lived-in one, open 365 days a year, with a Tintin exhibition (“The Secrets of Moulinsart”) for younger fans. It is the hardest to reach without a car.

Our advice for a first visit: Chambord and Chenonceau, plus Amboise if your tour fits it in. Three châteaux in a day is doable on a well-run tour, but it is the limit. A fourth means you see buildings, not rooms.

Useful if your tour leaves interiors to you, or if you go on your own. Since January 14, 2026, Chambord has charged visitors from outside the European Economic Area more, as an experiment that runs to December 31, 2026.

Doing the Loire by train

You can see the Loire without a car, but not all of it in one day. The trick is to pick one side of the valley and stick to it.

The Tours side: Chenonceau and Amboise

The TGV from Paris-Montparnasse reaches Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, next to Tours, in about an hour. From Tours, a regional TER train takes about 25 minutes to Chenonceaux station, which is 400 meters from the château, and about 20 minutes to Amboise, where the château is roughly a 15-minute walk from the station. Paris to Amboise is about two hours with the change.

The Blois side: Blois and Chambord

Direct trains from Paris-Austerlitz reach Blois in roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. The Château de Blois is in the town center, and the Rémi line 2 shuttle runs from Blois-Chambord station to Chambord all year (about €3.30 one way; check the fare locally).

Chambord and Chenonceau sit on different lines, so pairing them in one day without a car is not realistic. Cheverny has no public-transport option we could confirm, so plan on a tour or a rental car.

The Loire is outside the Île-de-France region, so the Paris métro ticket does not cover it: buy SNCF tickets on SNCF Connect. TGV fares go on sale in seasonal batches, usually three to six months ahead, and the cheapest go first. If you want the train without the logistics, one private tour pairs a train to Orléans with a local driver-guide, three châteaux of your choice, and lunch:

N° 06Bon à savoir

How to plan a Loire day

01

Budget for lunch

The coach tours do not include lunch; the most-reviewed one gives you free time in Blois to eat. Only a few small-group and private tours include a meal, so check the option you book.

02

Know how you will see the inside

Several tours include entry tickets but no guide inside, or give you an audio guide instead. If interiors matter, Chenonceau sells an audioguide ticket (€24), and Amboise includes a tablet guide.

03

Winter days are short

From October 26 to December 18, 2026, Chambord closes at 5pm. From November 2 to December 4, Chenonceau is open 9:30am to 4:30pm, and Amboise closes for lunch in November. Tours plan around this; independent travelers should too.

04

Christmas at the châteaux

Chambord returns to 6pm closing from December 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027, and some tours run a Christmas version while the châteaux are decorated. Chambord and Amboise close on December 25; Chenonceau and Cheverny stay open.

05

Wine without the driving

This is wine country. Several small-group and private tours add a tasting at a winery or at Chenonceau. Tastings are for adults; one tour lists grape juice for under-18s.

06

Traveling with kids

Under-18s enter Chambord free, and under-7s are free at Chenonceau and Amboise. One small-group tour sets a minimum age of 7, so check before booking with young children.

Questions travelers ask

Can you do the Loire Valley as a day trip from Paris?

Yes, but it is a long day. Chambord is about two hours from Paris by road and Amboise about two and a half, and organized tours run 12 to 13 hours. Two or three châteaux is the realistic maximum.

Which Loire château is best for a day trip from Paris?

Chambord and Chenonceau, the pair most tours are built around: Chambord for its scale, Chenonceau for its gallery over the river Cher. Add Amboise if you want Leonardo da Vinci’s home at Clos Lucé.

Do Loire Valley tours from Paris include lunch?

The large coach tours do not, and neither do most small groups. One small-group tour sells a three-course lunch as an option, and the private train-based tour lists lunch as included. Check the option before you pay.

Can you visit the Loire Valley by train from Paris?

Yes. The TGV reaches Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (Tours) in about an hour. From there, regional trains reach Chenonceau, whose station is 400 meters from the château, and Amboise. For Chambord, take a train to Blois and the year-round shuttle bus. Cheverny really needs a car or a tour.

How much are Loire château tickets in 2026?

Adult prices: Chambord €31 for non-EEA visitors (€21 EEA), Chenonceau €19 (€24 with audioguide), Château royal d’Amboise €17.30, Clos Lucé €20, and Cheverny €15.50. Most tours include entry, but check which châteaux.

Is the Loire Valley worth visiting in winter?

It can be. Chenonceau and Cheverny are open every day, and the châteaux are decorated around Christmas. Opening hours are shorter, though: Chambord closes at 5pm in low season, and Amboise closes for lunch in November.

Do I need to book Loire château tickets in advance?

Not usually for individuals, and Cheverny sells tickets on site only. Combined Amboise and Clos Lucé tickets are sold online only. If you take a tour, entry to the main châteaux is normally included.
